Time to Read: Ultraman 2011

I LIKE TOKUSATSU!! (This is Trae…he likes tokusatsu)

Thats some way to start an article… (This is Trae’s inner voice…he’s a bit negative)

Shut up, you know I’ve always been a fan of tokusatsu shows, from Kamen Rider to Super Sentai. Tokusatsu: stands for special effects show. A close American example of this would be Power Rangers, VR Troopers, etc. So as I’ve grown older I’ve come to see the strings that work the puppets. You notice the floppy costumes, the bendy swords, the explosions that happen for no reason, and you become sort of disillusioned to the genre.

So why do you still watch it.

I dunno…cool henshins?

Stupid.

IN ANY CASE! Though my feelings for the genre has waned over the years, something has recently happened that I’ve taken notice of. The tokusatsu genre has been moving to different formats. A great case of this being GARO-Honō no Kokuin, taking a series whose special effects can at times be painful and, with animation, make something truly spectacular.

However in this case we’ll talking about a different shift. Not just in format but also in tone as well. I’m talking about ULTRAMAN 2011.

Finally geez thought you’d drone on forever :’’’(

So I’ve never fully watched the Ultraman series but from what I can tell this takes place as an alternate sequel to the original series.

Our main character is Shinjiro Hayate, who has inherited the “Ultraman Factor” since his dad was bonded to the original Ultraman for so long. He’s a typical young man, with typical young man problems, but the series focuses on him coming to terms with what it means to be a protector, to have power, to ultimately become “Ultraman”.

Now that an alien force has shown itself the world needs a new protector. The return of the “Giant of Light”, Ultraman.

That’s a giant?

See that’s one of the most interesting things about this that differentiates this from the entirety of the Ultraman franchise. Any given Ultraman is a giant being that fights proportionately sized monsters. In this series Ultramar is the size of a regular person. So it’s Ultraman but it feels like the likes of Kamen Rider instead.

On that note the tone of the series is different than you would get from your standard Ultraman affair. Ultraman usually gives off light undertones. Friendship and believing in yourself are prevalent and has the series fit into the “Shonen” type of genre. This manga series instead takes a violent turn with a series of murders showing blood splatter and arms ripping off. It’s not a pretty sight.

So there’s a lot of action?

Oh yeah a lot of action and thanks to the series size, it’s bigger than your standard manga volume, so they can display nice action set pieces that might be a little hard to read out due to the mangaka’s art style.

So is this series any good?

Yeah its cool, you have you action, your sci-fi. It’s a definite must read if you are a tokusatsu fan. It’s up to five volumes so far with a sixth coming out soon. So go and check it out.

This line is fine, I would just add another line after it to really close it out.

“You won’t be disappointed!”

“You’ll shit your pants!”

“I’ll shit your pants!”

It doesn’t have to be exclamatory, just something to close with an emphasis on the recommendation.

Overall nice job. If you feel like messing with the article you can play with adding in more Inner Voice. Maybe use it to express apprehension to getting into the genre again, or something sarcastic like “Oh I’m sure it’ll be good, just like INSERT SHITTY TOKUSATSU SHOW HERE”, then you can refute the voice’s comment with personality however you like.
